Chapman Valve Mfg. Co.- Indian
Orchard, MA List 88 and List 90 models
The bonnet and barrel design makes this model look like a Darling hydrant with fluting.
On most hydrants "CHAPMAN" is cast vertically on the barrel; and two variations of this can be
found. On some the name spans the full height of the upper barrel whereas on others
it is only spans half height starting below the nozzles.
Below (or above) the Chapman name may be found V.O. (valve
opening) size and the model designation, i.e."88".
"CHAPMAN" also found on top of the bonnet.
Note the 4½" V.O. size has 6 bolts at the flanged barrel
joint and the 5" V.O. size has 8 bolts.
This first group has no Chapman lettering on the barrel:

This hydrant has a barrel that looks like that of a List 88 above; but with a bonnet similar to that of an
A.P.Smith "S" Series hydrant. We are unsure as to the true model designation for this hydrant.
On these hydrants "CHAPMAN" is cast vertically on the barrel; and two variations of this can be
found. On some the name spans the full height of the upper barrel whereas on others
it is only spans half height starting below the nozzles. This is the same arrangement as
found on the List 88 model above.
These hydrants are not year dated nor marked with valve opening size.

This model truly looks like a Darling hydrant. One source claims that Chapman
Valve List 90 looked so much like the Darling hydrants that Darling Valve sued
Chapman Valve which lead to the demise of Chapman Valve.
"CHAPMAN" found on top of the bonnet.
V.O. size and "L90" model designation found on the front of the barrel.
Note both the 4½" and 5" V.O. sizes have 8 bolts at the flanged barrel
joint.
