Kitagawa Iron Works manufactures this special design dry barrel hydrant for use in snowy climates. The hydrant stands at over 6½ feet tall, and requires two operating nuts. The operating nut located about midway up the barrel is used for normal operation. A second operating nut is atop the bonnet of the hydrant, and therefore remains accessable during heavy snow accumulations. The Matsudai-town Fire Department in Niigata Prefecture reports great satisfaction with this design in their region of extreme heavy snowfall.
